Gayle's fury overcomes Kolkotta !
A 12 ball innings of 38 runs by Gayle saw Bangalore thrash Kolkotta !
In a rain affected match, the D/L method proved to be the villain for Kolkotta, as Bangalore won with ease by Gayle's superb effort.
Two mighty sixes and six fours flowed off the bat of Gayle, scoring 36 runs boundaries in his brief innings of 38 ! The packed house of the Bangalore Stadium simply went ecstatic at this match winning innings from Gayle.
The target of 102 was achieved with three balls to spare, as the mighty W Indian laid the base for a solid score. With the loss of six wickets in 12.3 overs, they won the match with ease.
Inserted into bat, Kolkotta scored 89/4 from their restricted 13 overs. It could have been worse, if Y Pathan ( 36 ) and M Tiwary ( 19 not out ) had not played well.
Bangalore are now at the top of the table with 17 points from 12 matche. Kolkotta is now at the fourth spot.
The 45 K crowd had sat patiently watching the match, which was interrupted by two spells of rain. Two hours of play was lost and the Duckworth Lewis method came into effect.
Virat Kohli won the toss and sent Kolkotta in to bat, a decision proved right by Gayle !
In the first over of Brett Lee, Gayle blasted 16 runs and then ravaged Unadkat for 23 glorious runs !
RCB raced to 44 runs in just 16 balls and Gambhir heaved a sigh of relief when Gayle miscued a lofted drive off Lee into the hands of Kallis.
With this magnificent effort, Gayle had now aggregated 436 runs in seven innings in IPL 2011 and has taken the Orange Cap from another marauder, Sehwag ( 424 ).
Gayle has hit 32 sixes in IPL 2011, which is now a record.
It seems Gayle will be wearing the Orange Cap for a longish time, from the way he batted yesterday.
Pomersbach ( 16 ) and Kohli ( 15 ) also contributed to Bangalore's innings, despite the hurricane innings by Gayle.
Earlier, M Tiwari and Y Pathan proved to the redeemers of Kolkotta, as their 53 run partnership saved Kolkotta from an imminent collapse.
At the end of 11 overs, KKR were 69/3 and they did well to score 20 runs off the last two overs, before the umpires decided to reduce the match to 13 overs, because of rain.
KKR were 30/3, having lost Kallis and others.
Yousuf Pathan created another recored, taking his tally of sixes to 72, overtaking Gilchrist's 71 IPL sixes.
