Astro Meterology is right!

Astro Meteorology's prediction that Kala Varsha will start on May 29th was proved right, as rains lashed Kerala on that date. Meteorology had predicted that SW Monsoon or Edava Pathi will start on May 31st and ancient Astro Meteorology proved to be more accurate than modern Meteorology. Two major factors will inlfuence the stock markets - the monsoon and the global community prices. Markets had recovered sharply during the latter part of the weekend, showing promise for the bulls. But then the factors mentioned above will influence the bourses considerably. Everbody knows that the Earth's journey through the Ecliptic produces the seasons and the South West Monsoon started on May 29th, when the Sun entered the 15th degree of Taurus. Kala Varsha , as it is known, hit the southern end of Kerala on this day and it is now raining in Kerala. Rains are expected to accelerate when the Sun transits Lambda Orionis ( Mrigasira ) and Alpha Orionis ( Aridra ). Also the constellations of P

Dhoni triumphs again !

Image
We have said in our columns earlier that Dhoni is running his Rising Saturn Period. ( Pongum Sani ). This was proved yesterday when his side lifted the IPL Trophy. He had lifted the World Cup two months back. What a captain ! He has a fascination for silverware and the heavens helped him ! A 58 run triumph over the Bangaloreans and Chennai had retained the Trophy. Chennai put up a glorious total of 205 and followed it up with a superb bowling performance, restricting Bangalore to 147/8.Chennai was off to a great start, with the openers putting up 159 runs for the first wicket. M Vijay blasted 95 runs and Hussey 63, which laid the foundations for a formidable score. Chasing 206 to win, Bangalore were dealt a great blow, when the wily Ashwin dismissed Gayle for a blob. Dhoni, genius that he is, opened with Ashwin and that move paid off, as Gayle, the wearer of the Orange Cap, was back in the pavilion when the Bangalore innings started ! Gone was the threat before Chennai and Gayle'

Gayle lofts Bangalore to final

Image
A great innings of 89 runs off 47 balls was bewildering and that forced Mumbai out of IPL ! Gayle smashed the hapless Mumbai bowlers in his inimitable style. A mammoth score of 185/4 was posted, despite a quiver at the last stage of the innings, after inserted into bat by Sachin. Chasing, Mumbai were 83/5 but then recovered to 142/8, but that was not enough ! Sachin promised much, but perished at 40 and Mumbai panicked and the lost the match after his dismissal. Sachin hit Aravind for two fours across cover and over square leg and Mumbai moved to 20/2 in two overs. Gayle took over the bowling and the West Indian frustrated Blizzard with his subtle offbreaks. Blizzard was out to Aravind, when he tried to loft one over long on. Bajji was promoted as a pinch hitter and he smashed a six and two fours in his 13 but perished trying to hit Aravind over mid wicket. Sachin hit Aravind for fours and then hit Vettori to long on four but the spinner Syed had him stumped gloriously. Rohit Sharma (1

Bajji lofts Mumbai to victory !

Image
Bajji lofted Shakib for a six in the last over of the match as Mumbai beat Kolkotta in a thrilling finish. Now Mumbai meet Bangalore on Qualifier II and the winners will go on to face defending champions Chennai. Kolkotta was reduced to 147/7, as the Mumbai bowlers exploited the slow Wankhede track well. And Mumbai was going on to an easy victory, but then loss of some quick wickets put Kolkotta back in the game. Pollard and Rayudu were dismissed cheaply and Mumbai were in the doldrums, but Bajji and Franklin (29 off 25 ) steered Mumbai home. Mumbai raced to a glorious speedy start as Aidon Blizzard ( 51 ) and Tendulkar ( 36 ) blasted the Kolkottans to all parts of the field, leaving Gambhir gasping. Lee removed Blizzard and then R Sharma was unnecessarily run out. Sachin followed suit and Kolkotta was well back into the game. Tendo partnered Y Pathan in a 60 run partnership for the fifth wicket to redeem Kolkotta, who were in too deep in the Mulligatawny soup, after losing four

Raina and Morkel loft Chennai to victory !

Image
Raina's incredible knock, 73 off 50 balls, pulled Chennai to the final and he was ably supported by Albie Morkel. Six sixes and four boundaries flowed off the bat of the Indian No 7. An unconquered 46 run partnership with Albie brought home the bacon for Chennai. Albie Morkel blasted 28 off 10 balls. In the last over, Chennai needed 23 runs. Raina hit two towering sixes and took a single. Albie lofted one into the stands and Chennai won the match ! Chennai chased 176 for victory and they lost M Vijay and Hussey for cheap and were with their backs to the wall. At 7/2, the visitors were in the doldrums and were way behind in the midway of the match, but Bangalore lost the game in the last five overs. However Bangalore will have another chance, as they meet the winners of the Mumbai-Kolkotta clash. Earlier Kohli blasted an unconquered 70 off 44 balls to steer Bangalore to a score respectable (175/4). The Bangalore skipper started sedately, but accelerated at the end and blasted t

Sun's transit of the Pleaides produces rains in Kerala

Rains lashed Trichur at around 0500 AM initiating the rainy Njattuvelas. It normally starts to rain from Karthika Njattuvela onwards and then fierce rains are expected from May 29th onwards when the Sun transits Rohini, Mrigasira, Punarvasu and Pushya. The heavens are murky now, at about 0900 AM and there is no sign of the Sun. But then rains will accelerate and reach their crescendo during Mrigasira, Aridra, Punarvasu and Pushya Njattuvelas. The South West Monsoon normally hits the Andamans on May 20th, Bombay on June 10th and Kolkotta on June 8th. This time SW Monsoon seems to be delayed in the Andamans but we expect normal rains this season. Kerala receives 2500 mm rains every year and about 1500 mm during Kala Varsha or the South West Monsoon. 600 mm during the North East or Thula Varsha and about 400 mm rains during summer grace Kerala, making Kerala a green Paradise ! All have welcomed these rains as it is a big relief from the blistering heat. Yesterday temperature was around

Gayle lofts Bangalore again to victory

Image
Gayle's fantastic form with the bat continued and he pulled Bangalore to victory with a glorious innings of 75 not out off 50 balls. His knock lifted Bangalore to the top of the table with 19 points. The Bangalore bowlers restricted the formidable Chennai to 128/8 and then won the match with ease, thanks to the great West Indian. This time the WIian was not swinging at every ball, but waiting for the loose ball to be punished. Gayle smashed Bollinger and Raina and his incredible innings proved to be the bane for Chennai. Six sixes and four fours flowed off the bat of Gayle and he now has 511 runs in nine innings and he has taken the Orange Cap. He is followed Shaun Marsh with 504 runs. Kohli also played well, despatching the short balls to the fence. As Bangalore had lost Villers early, Kohli saw to that no furthur damage was done. Kohli made 31, before clipping Morkel into the hands of Ashwin. Inserted into bat, CSK lost regular wickets, reaching a paltry 128/8. Dhoni top scored w

Mumbai pull off sensational win

Image
Four runs required off the last ball and Rayudu hit it for six and Mumbai won off the last ball. What a game ! Franklin blasted 45 runs off 23 balls and Balaji was the villain for Kolkotta as he conceded four boundaries and a six, when Mumbai wanted just 21 off the last over. Franklin hit Balaji for four consecutive fours and then took a single and young Rayudu was left to face the last ball of Balaji, which he promptly hit for six. Mumbai reached fourth position with 18 points from 14 matches ahead of Kolkotta ( who have 16 points ). Bangalore is placed first with 19 points. For Kolkotta, Kallis smashed 59 off 42 balls, after they were reeling at 22/2. Kallis was supported by M Tiwari and Y Pathan who scored 35 and 36 balls. Three sixes and four fours flowed off the bat of the burly Springbok. Bhatia and Tendo took Kolkotta past the 170 mark and everybody thought that it was a match winning score. For Mumbai, Abu Nechim and Franklin took two wickets each, giving away 32 and 35 run

Dhawan & Mishra lift Deccans to victory !

Image
Punjab were beaten badly by Deccans and the play off maths was simplified yesterday. A superb innings of 95 not out by Dhawan and superb leg spin bowling by Amit Mishra ( 4 for 9 ) brought home the bacon for Deccans. Now Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkotta and Bangalore are into the play offs. Mumbai were delighted, as their match against Kolkotta is less tense as now it is only a match for them to finish at the top two. Now the question is who will finish at the top, as grabbing the top two slots will give the teams a lifeline as an extra match to enter the final. On Sunday there are two great matches, as Bangalore take on Chennai and Mumbai face Kolkotta. and these matches will decide the play offs. If Mumbai wins and Bangalore loses, they will reach the second spot. If Mumbai lose, they will finish fourth For Chennai and Bangalore, a win will see to that they finish at the top and a loss could see them at the fourth or third place. Delhi finished at the bottom of the IPL Points Table,as thei

Shane Watson lofts Rajastan to victory

Image
134 was not a non gettable target and RR won with ease. Shane Watson and Dravid scored those runs easily. Watson's blitzkreig 89 off 47 balls effectuated the greatest send off to retiring captain Shane Warne ! RR bowlers restricted Mumbai to 133/5 in the allotted 20 and then RR openers blasted the Mumbai bowlers to all parts of the field and achieved the target in just 13.1 overs. Now both Mumbai and Kolkotta have 16 points and they will take on each other on May 22. Punjab have 14 points and one match to go and Rajastan finished their engagement with 13 points. Chennai and Bangalore, with 18 and 17 points respectively, have already qualified for the playoffs. Watson took three wickets for 19 runs and then blasted the Mumbai bowlers in an incredible all round display. Dravid played the submissive role as opener, slamming six fours in his 42 off 32 balls. Watson's fury hit Malinga and the Slinga had to give 42 runs off his four overs. MI won the toss and batted and R Shar

Gambhir lofts Kolkotta to victory

Image
The Kolkotta spinners - Pathan, Abdulla and Shakib bowled superbly to restrict Pune to 118/7 and then a glorious 54 by Gambhir pulled KKR to victory. Another spineless batting performance by Pune and they lost another match. Yuvraj may be tired after the World Cup effort - he cannot be blamed for that - and Pune is in the doldrums, finishing at the 9th position. Kochi, another new entrant, is at No 6. Y Pathan scored 29 off 25 balls and Gambhir 54 off 46 balls to pull Kolkotta to victory. "Bowlers win matches" and the spin trio of Abdulla, Pathan and Shakib took five wickets to devastate the out of form Pune. Gambhir and Pathan were involved in a 64 run partnership in just 8.1 overs and this proved to be the matchwinning for Kolkotta. Kolkotta will now meet Pune on May 22 at home. Chennai and Banglore lead the IPL Points Table with 18 and 17 points respectively. Punjab has 14 points with one game to go. Invited to bat first, Pune tottered in a spineless display of batti

Jupiter's Transit of Aries will bring average rains !

Image
Average Monsoons are expected this year, as Jupiter traverses the hot Aries. ( Around 2200 mm of rains expected in Kerala ). According to Astro Meteorology, the Kala Varsha or the South West Monsoon will start from May 29th and Meteorology predicts that it will start on May 31st. The Arabian Sea Branch of the South West Monsoon or Edava Pathi will start early and the Bay of Bengal Branch of the S W Monsoon will reach Calcultta by the 8th of June. Normally SW Monsoon reaches Bombay by 10th of June. This time there will be average monsoon on the 825 km Malabar Coast, along coastal Maharashtra, coastal Goa, coastal Karnataka and coastal Kerala. This belt receives the maximum rains and eve in the summer there are rains in Kerala, which looks always greenish ! Kala Varsha is caused by the cold winds from the Indian Ocean, which rush in to neutrallise the hot air of the Thar Desert and North India. Saha proves he is good !

Image
Chennai's great run at home continued as they beat Kochi by 11 runs. Chennai was largely helped by wicket keeper Saha's brilliant 46. Later, the Chennai bowlers retricted Kochi to 141/5. Kochi finished their campaign with 12 points from 14 outings. For Chennai, it was their seventh victory at home . Ashwin was their top bowler, taking 1/16 off the allotted four overs. The dangerous Brendon was kept under control by Ashwin. As Brendon was the key player who could have done it for Kochi, he was kept quiet by the wily offspinner. However, Brendon was finally out to Jakati, clean bowled. Kochi's chance went out of the window thus and despite the rear guard action by Hodge, Kochi lost to a domineering Chennai. Saha has been out for a while and he proved himself yesterday with a 46 off 33 balls, with one four and three sixes. R P Singh clean bowled M Vijay and Chennai were 19/1. Raina holed out to Sreeshant for 19 and the score was 40/2. Badri did not last long and was out to Ho

Fierce Gilchrist takes revenge !

Image
A great double century partnership of 206 runs, between Gilchrist and Marsh destroyed Bangalore. It surpassed the earlier record of 170, posted by G Smith and Bosman. It was raining sixes and it was the highest partnership in T20 cricket. Bangalore were demolished by aggressive batting and lost by 111 runs. This superb perfomance by Adam reminded one of the Gilchrist of old. With Marsh ( 79 not out ), the greatest partnership in the history of T20 was posted. 232/2 was the highest in IPL 2011. It was the very champagne of cricket all the way. Bangalore was bundled out for 121 and thus Punjab recorded the second highest victory by 111 runs in the IPL. Bangalore's seven match winning streak was temporarily halted by a resurgent Punjab. This is Preity's team's fourth win in a row and they will have to beat Deccans to stay in the reckoning. Ryan Harris had Gayle caught behind for a blob and gone were the hopes of Bangalore. Kohli (11) was also dismissed by Harris and Bangalor

Gilchrist smashes 25 ball 50 !

A great blistering innings by Gilchrist, 50 off 25 balls and Punjab are racing towards a mammoth score. Punjab are 149/1, with Gilchrist and Marsh smashing the Bangalore bowlers to all parts of the field. 12 sixes so far in 15 overs ! Marsh crosses 50 off 34 balls and Gilchrist is going strong with 75 off 35 balls ! 163/1, as Marsh smashes another four. 30 runs in this over, 3 sixes and 3 fours off the bat of Shaun Marsh and he is now the wearer of the Orange Cap !

Pune lose again !

Image
Deccan beat Pune by six wickets. Pune could only score 136/9 and the Chargers raced to 138 in 19.2 overs. Dhawan ( 28 off 25 ) and Sohal ( 34 off 28 ) out on 67 for the first wicket. Within eight balls they departed, but Sanga ( 25 ), Duminy (23 ) and Christian ( 14 not out ) took the Chargers home. This ended Pune's last hopes for qualifying for the play offs. Now the Chargers have ten points with a game in hand. Pune has gone out of reckoning, following their eighth loss. The Warriors had put up a pathetic batting display, losing three wickets in seven ball midway. Though they began promisingly, with a 31 run partnership between Pandey ( 23 ) and Ryder ( 13 ) , they collapsed. They lost five for 14, three of them at 45. Amit Mishra took two wickets in two balls in his first over, after Steyn, Ojha and Chrisitan took the first three wickets. Yuvraj played well for his 23, but he had to depart in the 15th over. At that time, the Warriors were 92/7. Mitchell Marsh struck form, scor

Kochi smash Rajastan

Image
Superb bowling by Kochi restricted Rajastan to 97 ! Sreeshant and Puli ( Parameshwaran ) took two wickets each and Brad Hodge took four in a great display of bowling and Delhi paid the price for their inept batting. Hodge took 4/13 and then Kochi batsmen blasted the hapless Rajastan bowlers and finished the match in 7.2 overs ! Rajastan are out of the tournament. The dangerous McCullum and P Patel were at ease during their respective knocks of 29 and 21 not out. After losing Mahela to Oram, McCullum blasted four sixes and a four to rattle the Raj bowlers in his 12 ball stint. Then Patel and Hodge put in a fifty plus stand to take Kochi home. Brendon hit Shaun Tait for a six over mid wicket and then danced down the wicket to hit Oram for another six. He hit his NZ team mate for two more sixes, knocking the stuffing out of Rajastan. Hodge hit two sixes and five fours and Patel smashed two fours and a six. Hodge was superb with his off breaks and the combination of off spin plus the pace

Dharmasala beautiful ground : Gilchrist

Image
"It is the most stunning part of India and one of the most beautiful grounds in the world" said Adam Gilchrist about the scenic Dharmasala, the cricket capital of Himachal Pradesh. Situated at the face of the Dhalaudhar ranges, the snow kissed mountains arranged a magnificent view, as the 20 K stadium was full for the Sunday feast. Punjab beat Delhi yesterday. Valthaty smashed the Delhi bowlers to all parts of the field in a blistering 62 and took the orange Cap from Gayle. Shaun Marsh scored 46 and helped Valthaty to lay the foundation of a massive score, 170/6. Delhi could only score 141/8 and fell short of the target. Thoug a 50 plus stand by Delhi openers, Ojha and Warner gave a false indication , none of the other batsmen impressed and Delhi lost the game. Asked about luck, Gilchrist said "I dont believe in luck. You create opportunities or miss them. We pounced upon ours. Delhi didn't". Punjab produced a clinical all round performance to score this 29 run

Delhi back by Irfan's double strike !

Irfan struck two lethal blows and Punjab are 137/3 in 16 overs. Valthaty smashed 62 and Shaun Marsh 47. Punjab has lost their fourth wicket and David Hussey is gone for 3. Punjab finished at 170/6 and now Delhi are 42/0, with Naman Ojha on 26 and David Warner on 7.

Mumbai lose again

Image
Mumbai seems to be on a losing streak, and could not chase the 136 run targer set by DC. The Chargers were successful in defending a score of 135/6 and restricted mighty Mumbai to 129/8. The ultimate over bowled by Munaf changed the complexion of the match. The Chargers were struggling at 112/6 and then Munaf began the last over. Dhawan hit him for a six and then Amit Mishra hit Munaf for four consecutive fours. From 112/6, DC had gone to 135/6, a gain of 23 runs in the last over ! This led to a verbal exchange between Munaf and Mishra. The umpire had to intervene to stop the verbal duel. One word leading to others, which in their turn led to several more. On a glorious spinning track, the MI batsmen, including Sachin, could only plod and scratch. They had to play 60 dot balls ! Duminy got Blizzard cheaply and Ishant Sharma shot out Rayudu (2) and Rohit Sharma ( 4), to make Mumbai 25/3. To their detriment, Mumbai saw that stroke making was difficult on that track. Unknown pacer, Rajan

Gayle's fury overcomes Kolkotta !

Image
A 12 ball innings of 38 runs by Gayle saw Bangalore thrash Kolkotta ! In a rain affected match, the D/L method proved to be the villain for Kolkotta, as Bangalore won with ease by Gayle's superb effort. Two mighty sixes and six fours flowed off the bat of Gayle, scoring 36 runs boundaries in his brief innings of 38 ! The packed house of the Bangalore Stadium simply went ecstatic at this match winning innings from Gayle. The target of 102 was achieved with three balls to spare, as the mighty W Indian laid the base for a solid score. With the loss of six wickets in 12.3 overs, they won the match with ease. Inserted into bat, Kolkotta scored 89/4 from their restricted 13 overs. It could have been worse, if Y Pathan ( 36 ) and M Tiwary ( 19 not out ) had not played well. Bangalore are now at the top of the table with 17 points from 12 matche. Kolkotta is now at the fourth spot. The 45 K crowd had sat patiently watching the match, which was interrupted by two spells of rain. Two hours o

Badrinath and Rohit in Indian squad

Image
For the WI tour, the Indian selectors selected the following Gautam Gambhir ( cap ) Suresh Raina Parthiv Patel (wk) Virat Kohli Yuvraj Badrinath Rohit Sharma H Singh R Ashwin Praveen Kumar Ishant Sharma Munaf Patel Vinay Kumar Yusuf Pathan Amit Mishra Wriddhiman Saha (wk) Badrinath and Rohit come in because of their splendid performances in the IPL. So also Vinay Kumar, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma. Parthiv Patel and W Saha seems to be surprise selections, as other wicket keeper batsmen like Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik etc are there for selection. Gambhir as the captain is the right choice. The rest are all automatic selections, like Yuvraj and Kohli. We are sorry for Sreeshant. Astrologically his Jupiter has moved to the adverse Sixth House and that explains why he missed selection.

Dinesh Karthik pulls Punjab to victory !

Image
Karthik smashed 69 off 31 balls to loft Punjab to victory, over the hapless Kochi Tuskers. 178 was a mammoth total achieved by the Tuskers, helped largely to a great innings of 76 by skipper, Mahela. Chasing 179 was not easy and Punjab lost Valthaty ( 17 ) and Gilchrist ( 9), raising visions of a collape. But Dinehs Karthik ( 69 ) and Shaun Marsh ( 42 ) pulled Punjab to safety. Punjab were 31/2, when both put of 111 in 9.3 overs. David Hussey completed the formalities by lofting R Jadeja for a six and Punjab won by six wickets. Karthik smashed five sixes and seven fours, but could not get the wicket keeper's slot in the Indian team. Marsh smashed two sixes and five fours in his blistering knock. Brilliant swing bowling by R P Singh ( 4/25) could not deter Punjab from achieving their objective. With this win, Punjab moved to the sixth spot and is optimistic about playing in the play offs. Mahela later said that Kochi is not consistent. Kochi now finds virtually shot out of IPL

Chennai unconquered at Chepauk !

Image
Dhoni proved how devastating he can be, with a superb 63 off 31 balls. An 18 run victory was carved by Chennai, as Delhi could not reach the target of 177. With four sixes and five fours, Dhoni played a captain's responsible innings. With the in form Badrinath, who scored a regal 55, he guided Chennai to a mammoth 176/4 in 20 overs. A Delhi sans Sehwag could not chase the required runs ! Irfan scored an unconquered 46, but that proved to be in vain as none of the other Delhi batsmen could partner him. With this win, Chennai has 8 wins and their unbeaten streak at home stand at six wins. Dhoni and Badri scored fifties in contrasting styles. In only 9.2 overs, they added 96 runs for the fourth wicket. Dhoni smashed his fifty off 28 balls and finished the innings, lofting Irfan for two consecutive sixes. Suddenly the Dhoni of old was in full view and all Indians were delighted at the way they had got the old Dhoni. Dhoni had curbed himself to play solidly, actuated by the pressu

Rajastan quiver before Gayle storm !

Image
Gayle seems to be unstoppable. His 70 not out took Bangalore to victory for the sixth consecutive time. The 146 posted by Warne's men could not deter their triumphant march! Gayle with his unconquered 70 paved the way for the Bangalore win. With this win, Bangalore moved over to the second spot. Dilshan, in his last appearance in IPV 2011, scored a fierce 38, while the baby of the Indian team made skipper, Kohli, scored 39 not out. Rajastan surrendered the initiatve, after being 72 for no wicket, with Watson and Dravid going strong. Then they lost both Watson and Dravid (37) and could only score 146/6, which was not enough to stop Gayle & Co. Rajastan have to win the two remaining matches. Bangalore moved to the second spot, with 15 points from 11 matches. In the absence of Vettori, Kohli led Bangalore. Warne dropped Gayle and that proved to be costly, as the dashing West Indian hammered four sixes and ten fours off 44 balls, in his blistering, matchwinning 70 not out. Even tho

Punjab bowl out Mumbai for 87 and win !

Munaf 5/21 went in vain as Mumbai were shot out for 87 by Bhat

Ganguly stars in Pune win !

Image
Ganguly was unconquered on 32 when Pune won the match by six wickets. Deccan's batting failed again, as they could only muster 136/8. Duminy top scored with 30. Teja also scored 30 and none of the other batsmen impressed. For Pune, Ryder scored 35, Ganguly was 32 not out and M Pandey top scored with 49. Even though Uthappa and Yuvraj perished for 1 and 2, Pune reached the target of 137, for the loss of just 4 wickets. Ganguly got an opportunity to silence his critics by a classic unconquered innings to guide Pune to an emphatic win by six wickets over the powerful Deccans. He was unbeaten on 32 off 32 balls, as Pune overcame the Deccan score with ten balls to spare. Mitchell Marsh came in the limelight with his brilliant 4/25, which restricted the Deccans to 136/8. Ryder's blistering 35 off 20 balls and Pandey's 49 paved the way for the Pune victory. All eyes were riveted on Ganguly, as he strode to the wicket at the fall of Ryder. He did not disappoint his fans, as he b

Chennai prove regal again !

Image
Dhoni's brutal assault on the Royals paid off. Also Vijay's classic 50. And professional bowling by the Kings proved to be curtains for the Royals. Chennai moved to the second position of the IPL Table., with seven wins from 11 matches, with 14 points. A mammoth 196/3 was posted and bowlers led by Bollinger ( 3/22), shot out Rajastan for 133. M Hussey scored 46 off 30, Raina 43 off 27 and Vijay with his brilliant stroke play scored 53 off 40 balls to post that formidable score. Dhoni smashed three mighty sixes and three fours. Vijay hit three sixes and two fours. Hussey hit the fence eight times and Raina six times. Rahane scored 52 off 36 balls. Rajastan needed a flying start badly which their openers Dravid and Watson could not give them. Albie Morket removed the in form Ross Taylor, dealing a great blow to the Royals, who were smarting at the loss of the openers. The remaining Royals batsmen buckled under pressure, with the solitary exception of Rahane. The Royals wer

Ganguly's presence affects turnaround ?

Sourav may not have played for Pune but his presence seems to have electrified the team. He is hungry for revenge and his team Pune turned around yesterday with a win, having lost seven consecutive matches. Both desperate teams, Pune and Punjab locked horns yesterday and they beat Punjab by five wickets. Sourav appears pleased and he will go all out to prove a point ! His knowledge and experience will definitely benefit Pune Warriors ! Punjab were restricted to a mere 119/8, after the hosts opted to bat. As it was a small target, Yuvraj finished the game with a blistering knock of 35 off 15 balls. Pandey ( 28) and Ryder ( 15) raced to a good start, by adding 32 runs. Bhatt removed Uthappa (22) and Ryder but Yuvraj consolidated with his fiery performance. Yuvraj hit Bhatt for two fours and two sixes, 22 runs in the 15th over. Rahul Sharma again bowled superbly and gave only 17 runs in his four overs and removed Gilchrist (3) and Valthaty ( 23). Mitchell Marsh, the younger brother of Sha

Can a batsman finish the game in one over ?

Image
One over. 37 runs off that with four sixes and one four. The unhappy bowler was Tursker's Prashant and Gayle the perpetrator. Scoring a whirlwind 44 runs off just 16 balls, with five sixes and three fours, Gayle finished Kochi and Prashant ! Bangalore were in dire straits when Gayle arrived instead of Dirk Nannes. Gayle has turned around the fortunes of Bangalore with two great centuries and other whirlwind knocks. He has so far hit 26 sixes and 31 boundaries and he can carry Bangalore into the semi finals single handed ! Kochi fared badly and could only score 119, setting a modest target of 120 for Gayle & Co to finish it off !

The D/L method floors Chennai again !

Image
Dhoni and others had criticised the D/L method. Here they are, at the receving end, again ! In a rain affected match in Kolkotta, Kolkotta made 114/4 and then Chennai were 61/2, when rain stopped play again. Kallis remained cool and unbeaten on 21 off 23 balls, when Manoj Tiwari was 15 not out from 12 balls. Earlier Kolkotta had lost Eoin Morgan ( 5 ) and Gambhir ( 16 ). In the afternoon, rain had affected play and the match was delayed by an hour. Iqbal Abdulla ( 4-0-15-1) and Brett Lee ( 4-0-8-0) bowled superbly, using the conditions of the rain affected pitch well. Chennai were restricted to 114/1, after they opted to bat first. Badrinath smashed 54 off 41 balls before he ran himself out in the last ball of the innings. Albie Morkel hit 30 off 30 balls and partnered Badrinath in a stand of 65. Lee and Abdulla ensured that the Chennai batsmen could not score fast. Abdulla accounted for M Viay for 5 and Lee gave only five runs in his first three overs. In overcast conditions, Lee and

Mumbai overcome Delhi

Image
Mumbai beat Delhi by 32 runs and zoomed to the first position on the leaderboard, with 16 points from 10 games. They have booked a berth in the last four stage of IPL 2011. On the contrary, Delhi is out of the May 24-25 play off race and are down in the Points Table at the seventh position. Inserted in to bat, Mumbai was off to a speedy start, with their opener Aiden Blizzard smashing 37 in 23 balls. And then a great partnership between Rayudu and R Sharma took them to a mammoth 178/4 ! Rayudu top scored with 59 and Sharma 49. When Delhi chased, they were shattered initially and were 4/3 ! They lost Sehwag cheap, but then V Rao ( 37) and Hopes ( 56) took them to respectability, but to no avail, as Mumbai won by 32 runs. The visitors were bowled out for 146 in 19.5 and went to their seventh defeat in eleven games. A clinical and professional bowling display by the No 1 favourites ( Mumbai ) saw the Delhites tottering. They choked and sent Warner, Sehwag and Ingram within the first

Gayle smashes Punjab

Image
A player can dominate a match. As Sehwag proved, Gayle also proved. A blistering hundred and that was curtains for Punjab. Gilchrist hailed Gayle's knock as phenomenal. "That was a phenomenal knock. The wicket was doing a bit and he did not get bat on ball for 10 balls. Then he took the game away from us. We were shell-shocked actually" said Gilchrist after the match, praising Gayle's 107. Gayle smashed nine sixes and ten fours in his 49 ball knock and Gilchrist said his side was chasing more than 230, when Gayle was going strong. "It is a small ground, there were a few mishits from Gayle that carried over. We pulled back a little bit. It looked like they would get 230-240, but it was all too much for us" . "He (Gayle) came back to take lazy three wickets. He has brought a good change for his team. We play again in two days, have got to try and fire up again" said the Aussie. Vettori was delighted that his side had entertained the crowd with a bril

Sehwag demolishes Deccans

Image
With a superb display of batting hitting 119 off 56 balls with 13 fours and six sixes, Sehwag simpley destroyed the bowling of the Deccans. DDD were 25/3 and then Sehwag took over the responsibilty. He had taken DDD to victory with a superb innings. Sehwag proved that Fortune favours the brave. A coup le of catches were dropped and DDD capitalised on that. When he wsa out in the 17th over, the Deccans came up to congratulate him. Steyn removed Finch for a duck and Ishant removed Ojha for 7 and Rao for 3 to reduce DDD to 25/3. Viru said that the target of 176 was not impossible and if he batted 16 overs, he knew he could do it. "I was always telling my boys that if a set batsman can bat for 15-16 overs, any target is achievable for players like myself, Sachin Tendulkar, Adam Gilchrist" said the formidable blaster." Sehwag was not at all bothered when Sharma and Steyn reduced DDD to 25/3. "Steyn and Ishant are both world-class bowlers. I was telling myself that if I c

Tuskers trample Riders

Image
Great bowling performances by Raiphi, Prashant, Sreeshant and V Kumar made Kochi win. A glorious 22 runs off the last over of Brett Lee by fellow Aussie Brad Hodge lifted Kochi to a respectable 156. Hodge hit Lee for two sixes and two fours in the last over. That over made all the difference, admitted Gambhir after the match, as Kochi triumphed by 17 runs. Earlier Eoin Morgan's half century went in vain as the Tuskers trampled upon the Knights with a clinical bowling and fielding performance. Y Pathan, Gambhir, Kallis all perished in the run chase. Kallis had his stumps shattered by a slow leg cutter from Raiphi and in the next ball Gambhir was out to Raiphi. Kolkotta 69/0 at one stage with Kallis and Morgan going strong were 69/2. Raiphi had brought Kochi back into the match. Morgan slammed 8 fours and 2 sixes in a blistering display of batting, hitting the Kochi bowlers to all parts of the field. Morgan took the attack to the bowler's end, as the fall of the two wickets did

Kochi score 156

Image
Great batting by Mahela ( 55 ) and Hodge ( 35 ) helped Kochi to score 156 againt KKR. Kochi had a disastrous start, when McCullum was out to Unadkat for 1 and then Patel was out to Unadkat for 21, which sent Kochi reeling at 30/2. Mahela did the repair work and his 55 was studded with 2 sixes and 2 fours. Brad Hodge also hit two sixes and three fours in his 35. Kolkotta raced off to a great start and are now 56/0, with Kallis and Morgan unconquered off 8.4 overs. Kallis is on 38 and Morgan 16.

Chennai prove to be Kings

Image
What regal batting ! M Hussey with 79 not out and Raina 61 powered Chennai to a 8 wicket victory over hapless RR. RR started magnificently with the openers, Dravid and Watson putting on 86 off 10 overs. Watson was out to Jakati and then a collapse started and Royals were 147/6 ! Chennai blasted 149 for the loss of just wickets. The Royal's hopes were dashed by a burst from Albie Morkel who claimed 2 wickets in one over. When Dravid and Watson were going strong, a 200 plus total seemed strong. For a change, Dravid dominated the stand and Watson had to play second fiddle. The CSK bowling wilted under pressure and then Jakati changed the game when he came on to bowl, claiming the wicket of Watson. Aswin and Ranadiv claimed wickets and then RR fell to an abysmal 147. A scintillating 137 run partnership for the second wicket between Raina and Hussey changed the game. Botha trapped Vijay for 5 and Chennai were not off to a bright start. But the in form Raina came in to partner Hussey an

Pune lose for the seventh consecutive time !

Image
It is LLLLLLL for Pune now, their seventh successive defeat. Mumbai's bowling proved to be formidable, as they restricted Pune to 139/7. Earlier Mumbai scored 160/7 after being inserted into bat and T Suman smashed 36 off 16 balls and Keiron Pollard hit a magnifienct 29 to post a mammoth total of 8 per over. Malinga led the Mumbai attack with the figures of 3/25, followed by Bajji ( 1/17), M Patel ( 1/30) and Pollard ( 1/36). When Pune chased 161. Jesse Ryder was out first ball to Bajji. Manish Pandey became the Man of the Hour with a brilliant 59 but then that could not save hapless Pune, who have now lost seven matches in a row. Pune and Kochi can be excused as they are inexperienced in IPL. Pandey's 59 came off 47 balls and it was simply blitzkreig. Uthappa remained unbeaten with 34 off 26 and these two resisted the Mumbai attack. Yuvraj hit two sixes but then got out to a Malinga bouncer, held brilliantly by Munaf. Earlier, Mumbai was just 65 off 10 overs but then a hero em

Yousuf lofts Kolkotta to victory !

Image
A blistering 47 not out by Yousuf Pathan sent the Deccans to another defeat, despite Shikhar Dhawans' fighting half century. 170 was a chasable total, but the Deccans made a mess of it. When they lost four wickets for 70 runs, it was more or less curtains for them. But then Shikhar Dhawan was unconquered and he along with Teja smashed 55 runs off 31 balls to keep Deccan in the hunt. Iqbal Adbullah took two wickets in one over, as he removed both Sohal and Sangakara. Then Rajat Bhatia removed two more to put Kolkotta on course to victory. Earlier, Yousuf tried his chance and blasted three fours and three sixes in a magnificent 47 not out off just 26 deliveries. He was let off twice by the butterfingered Deccans ! With in form Manoj Tiwari ( 33 off 28 balls), he added 80 runs in just eight overs for the fourth wicket which laid the base of the formidable Kolkotta score. Gambhir and Kallis also made good contributions, scoring 35 off 22 and 30 off 31 respectively. With this win, KKR z

Punjab fail to destroy Mumbai fortress !

Image
Again Sachin and Rayudu proved they are in great form by blasting fifites and Mumbai scored a good 159/5 and then restricted Punjab to 136/8, with the help of Slinga Malinga and Musa Patel ! Both two wickets. Valthaty scored a useful 33 and Shaun Marsh was the best of the Punjab batsmen. He scored 61 with eight fours. Mumbai opened with Bajji and Bajji trapped Gilchrist lbw. Punjab 1/1 ! Then came the partnership that mattered for Punjab, as Marsh and Valthaty took the score to 73, when Valthaty was caught Pollard off Symonds. He hit two mighty sixes and one four. Then the procession of batsmen began, with Punjab collapsing to 136/8! Shaun Marsh, with his brilliant 61, was out when the score was 131 and it was more or less curtains for Punjab ! For Mumbai, Davy Jacobs was out ten when the score was 14 and then the in form Rayudu joined Sachin. Both took the score to 109, when Rayudu was caught by Karthik off Chawla. Sachin was eventually out when he was on 51, caught Nayar off Harris.

Prashant & Co jolt Delhi in Delhi !

Image
Great bowling by Prashant Parameswaran and Vinay Kumar restricted Delhi to 140/6 and then attacking batting by McCullum and Patel took the game away from Delhi. "Who is this guy?" asked Sehwag about Prashant and his team mates replied that he is a new guy who has just boarded the bus. Sehwag said that Prashant is a good find for Kochi and for India. Prashant was hit for six by Sehwag but then he came back to take the edge of the Delhi marauder and Delhi had lost their prime batsman. Sehwag, who had scared Kochi with two fours off R P Singh, was back in the pavilion and Kochi had struck early. Naman Ojha hit Prashant for a six and a four. Warner's innings was needed by Delhi but he miscued Sreeshant and Delhi were two down. RP then took the wicket of Ojha and Delhi had lost 3 wickets for 40 odd runs. It was left to V Rao and Nagar to retrieve the innings and 17 balls went without a single boundary. Then at 97, Nagar was out to V Kumar and Prashant came back to claim the pr

Kings prevail over Bulls !

Image
A blistering 50 off 22 balls, with four sixes. This is the innings of Sunny Sohal and DC are 65/0. Earlier Albie Morkel hit 3 consecutive sixes in the death, as CSK amassed 165! In trying to reverse sweep, Sunny Sohail hits his own wicket and is out for 56 !That is inexperience, nothing else, but what a great innings ! Chennai scored 165 and Deccan chased 166. The Bulls were off to an explosive start with Sunny Sohal hitting the CSK bowlers to all parts of the field. A devastating 56 with six fours and four sixes held the stadium spellbound. Mind you, it was off just 30 balls ! The Bulls raced to 71 for no loss, off just 6.4 overs, thanks to the big hittting Sohal. Dhoni, known for his brilliant captaincy and bowling changes, created havoc in the opposition as Albie Morke ( 3/38 ), Doug Bollinger ( 2/26 ) and Ashwin ( 0/23) bowled well in the death overs. With this win, CSK moved to the fourth place in the IPL Table. Sohal scored the fastest fifty in IPL 2011, off just 24 deliveries, w
